Growing up in Hawaii I’ve never really enjoyed “Hawaiian” music or songs. When I say “Hawaiian” I don’t mean those that use only the Hawaiian language or those that associated with hula, like the oli or mele. Rather, I use it to mean songs or music locally produced that have a more contemporary feel.
Now that I’m (ahem) older, I must have mellowed out a bit because songs I once shunned listening to is now “music to my ears” (yep, pun intended, I think?). One such song I now really love listening to is Hapa’s “Kuulei Kuuipo”.
Released in 1994 by HAPA (Barry Flanagan and formerly Kelii Kanealii), it’s a love song with a slow tempo and nice melody.
I’ll be sharing more “Hawaiian” music in future posts!
