Inaugural Beauty Army Kit Has Arrived!

My kit has finally arrived and although it took longer than I expected to get to me, I’m fairly impressed with what I see so far (with one exception*….more on that later).

For $12 Beauty Army provides the customer the option to either choose their own (up to six) samples or have the samples chosen for them based on their profile.

I chose my own samples and they were packed in a brushed black box embossed with the Beauty Army name as well as beauty/fashion jargon.
Inside the box the lid featured pink camouflage….I’m guessing pink symbolizes ‘Beauty’ and the print symbolizes ‘Army’ of the name.  Besides the lid being the first thing to see when the box is opened is a welcome card.
Right beneath the card is black tissue paper that neatly wraps over and covers the samples.
In my kit after lifting open the black tissue I found two of my sample wrapped with pink tissue paper while the rest of my samples weren’t and all the items were scattered around in the box.  Not sure if the unwrapped sample were wrapped and came loose (there were other tissue laying in the box).
Here are the samples I chose:

SunFx Body Wash
The size of this sample was considerable.  It’s 2.2 floz.

Control Corrective Botanical Soothing Cream SPF30
Don’t know the sample quantity.

Boo-Boo Cover-Up
Edamame-sized sample in a 3g jar.

LaROCCA Fleur de Sel Body Polish
Not sure of sample quantity but it looks like it in a 10g jar with maybe 5-9g of product?

Shea Terra Rose Hips Black Soap Facial Cleanser
One (1) ounce sample.

*MyFace Cosmetics Morococo Eye Shadow
Full-sized sample.  Here’s the exception I mentioned earlier.  As you can see above, the shadow cracked in the pan and is a crumbled jumble.  I’ll have to depot and re-press this.

Other than the shipping and damage product issues, I’m quite impressed with the quality of the samples and packaging (or boxing) of the kit.

If I review any of the products I’ll post separate entries for each.

Beauty Subscription Service: Green Grab Bag-1, Beauty Army-0

I recently signed for two beauty ‘subscription’ services: a)White Apricot’s Green Grab Bag, b) Beauty Army; and although I haven’t received my kit from either, I have to say as of right now Green Grab Bag is looking to be the ‘better’ service.  Why?

Shipping.  Yep, you read it right.  Shipping.  Beauty Army shipped my kit on January 6.  Green Grab Bag shipped my kit (known as a bag) January 17.  So why haven’t I gotten my Beauty Army kit yet?  Because they sent it by SLOW BOAT.  You see, I don’t live in the continental US (but I do live in the USA) and it seems that BA shipped their kits via USPS package service, which is the SLOWEST (and least costly) way to ship packages in bulk.  That’s fine and dandy for folks on the continent where even though their stuff might travel by truck, they’ll still get it within a week (I’m guessing from the responses I’ve seen on twitter), whereas mine is estimated to take 10-15 days by boat.  Yes, literally.  Not by plane, by SLOW BOAT.

Green Grab Bag on the other hand shipped my bag via USPS PRIORITY MAIL.  Normal continental US delivery is 2-3 days.  To me, add maybe another day or two.  That would still be faster than SLOW BOAT.  It might even get here BEFORE Beauty Army’s kit.  Geez.

Customer service in itself was pretty good from both companies.  Both responded quickly  and politely to my queries.  Both ‘listened’ to what I had to say and offered to consider ways to perhaps improve their service.

As for the product samples….I can’t offer any thoughts obviously, but I’ll be sure to post an entry for kit when I get them.

Sorry to rant, but I needed to vent some of my frustration with waiting. :(

Metallic shade: Goldfish (bright gold)

Each shade weighs approximately 1.3g (x5) and the palette will retail for $34.99.

Zoya Savita & Charla

If you didn’t know, sorry too late now, but Zoya had another FREE promo where you could get any 2 bottles of Zoya nail color, with the execption of the True & Fleck Effect Collection.  All you had to do was pay for shipping.

The promo ran from 1/3-1/9 and I was able to get my hands on my very first bottles of Zoya for just $6.95.

The 2 colors I chose were Savita and Charla.

Savita is a “bold, vibrant medium purple with strong red and gold shimmer.”  It’s from the Matte Velvet Winter Collection and has a “velvet matte finish.”
Charla is a “tropical blue sparkiling metallic” and is part of the Sparkle Collection.
Zoya ‘natural’ polishes are formulated with out toluene, formaldehyde, DBP (dibutyl phthalate), and camphor.

Sorry for the crappy application!  Besides not having conditioned nails it was late at night when I applied and I was in a rush.  Applied on without base or top coat.

I LOVE both colors!  Savita is such a beautiful royal purple with just the barest hint of red (looks fucshia to me) shimmer (couldn’t see any gold).  And I love the matte finish.  The only downside of this polish is that you have to work fast.  It dries quickly.  Also, I noticed that the color on the nail tips wore very quick.  Not sure if it was me and my crappy application (I did two coats though), or just the formula?

Charla, well what can I say?  Absolutely pretty teal color!  I think this one has to be the prettiest color I’ve ever worn on my nails.  So much sparkle, but not so much that it looks tacky.  And, it’s wearing longer than Savita, yay!

Thank you Zoya for these two “free” polishes!

Beauty From The Earth BF/CM Haul Swatches

More swatches!  This time it’s BTFE’s 24 K Gold, Dusty Rose, Gem, and Ocean Mist.  The first three are primary pigments, meaning they’re unblended pure colors that were not custom made by BFTE.

Swatched over primer.

Indoors under daybulb w/flash

  • 24 K Gold- sparking and metallic gold shade.  Another lovely gold shade.  Even though this one is called 24 K, it’s lighter than Sugarpill’s Goldilux.
  • Dusty Rose- smooth metallic rose gold.  Very pretty!  Leans a wee bit brown in certain lighting angles.
  • Gem- hybrid of teal and sea green.  Nice turquoise-y shade.
  • Ocean Mist- light ocean blue with gold shimmer and gold sparkle.  My absolute fave of the four.-Outdoors under sunlight

As with most loose shadows I’ve tried so far, color tends to be sheer when applied dry without primer.  They definitely work better over a primer (best with a sticky base) for maximized color payoff, staying power, and fallout minimization.  They could also be applied wet or foiled for more metallic effect.
